Hardwood vs. Engineered: Which Is Right for Your Home?

Solid hardwood and engineered hardwood both have their place. The right choice depends on your subfloor, location in the home, and long-term goals.

Choosing between solid hardwood and engineered hardwood depends on several factors specific to your home and goals.

Solid hardwood is ideal for above-grade floors on wood subfloors. It can be refinished multiple times over its 50-to-100-year lifetime, making it an excellent long-term investment. It is not recommended for basements or high-humidity areas.

Engineered hardwood has a real wood veneer over a plywood core, making it dimensionally stable in humidity fluctuations. It is appropriate for concrete subfloors, basements, and over radiant heat. The wear layer determines how many times it can be refinished, typically two to three times.
