How to Care for Hardwood Floors After Refinishing

Protect your refinishing investment with the right care routine from day one.

The first 24 to 48 hours after refinishing are critical. Avoid all foot traffic except essential movement through the house. The finish is still curing and footprints, dust, and debris will mark the soft surface. Do not place area rugs or furniture on the floor during this period. Keep doors closed to control dust entry and maintain temperature and humidity. The smell of polyurethane is strong, so open windows and run ventilation fans to exchange air. Your family may need to stay in a hotel or with friends overnight because the fumes require open windows and can trigger headaches or respiratory irritation in sensitive individuals.

During the first 7 days, continue careful treatment. No wet mopping. Use only dry dust mops or soft brooms for cleaning. Do not slide furniture across the floor. Use felt pads under all furniture legs and chairs when moving items. Avoid heavy traffic patterns and make sure anyone walking on the floor wears clean, soft-soled shoes or socks. The finish is hardening gradually during this week, and any damage done now will be permanent. Wait until day 7 before introducing rugs or allowing normal family activity.

Ongoing care determines how long your refinished floors last. Maintain indoor humidity between 35 and 55 percent year-round. Buffalo's climate swings create humidity challenges, especially in winters when heating dries air and summers when AC battles moisture. A humidifier in winter and dehumidifier in summer help stabilize conditions. Low humidity causes wood to shrink and create gaps. High humidity causes swelling and cupping. Stable humidity prevents these problems and extends the life of your finish.

Clean with pH-neutral hardwood cleaners only. Vinegar, ammonia, and harsh soaps strip the protective finish and damage the wood. Never use steam mops or wet mops that leave standing water. Dust or dry-mop weekly and vacuum regularly using a soft brush attachment. Felt pads under furniture prevent scratches from normal movement. With proper care, your refinished hardwood lasts 8 to 12 years before needing a light re-coat. A full refinish is typically needed every 10 to 12 years depending on traffic.
